Godzilla

I watch a lot of trailers. Too many in fact. The problem with trailers is that if I watch them enough times I can see the plot and begin to guess what is going to happen, who's going to die etc. I watched the Godzilla trailer many times and I have to admit, I liked the look of it and couldn't really see what was going to happen. I was excited for this one.

Weeks later, I did the usual trip to the cinema with fiancĂ© in toe. She also loves films, but not trailers. For the first hour of set up with the human characters and Godzilla backstory and so on, I was intrigued but not desperate for more. By the time Godzilla made an appearance I was so bored and uninterested that I didn't care. I didn't care about the human characters one bit. Now I like Araon Taylor kick ass and I like Walter White, Elizabeth Olsen, ken watanbe but I just didn't feel anything for any of them. They let this film down for me.

Only when Godzilla is on screen did I feel a little excitement, tension, even emotion. Without giving away the plot the end 20 minutes of Godzilla are the best and most fun. I really enjoyed standing out of my seat and leaving too.

150 million well spent.
Very disappointed.

JOHN CARTER

Andrew Stanton, the Pixar mastermind that created such titles as toy story, a bugs life, monsters inc, finding nemo and wall e, brings his first live action picture to the screens with john carter. Based on the books by Edgar Rice Burroughs, the rich and vast source material would be a challenge for any director to bring to the screen but Stanton does well in establishing a believable world which carter jumps around in.
The story begins with our hero john carter as a war veteran in 1868 America being mysteriously transported to planet barsoom, that's mars to me and you. War is raging between different races as one race is planning to destroy all that stands with the help of the always reliable mark strong and his shape shifting villains. John carter inevitably gets caught up in the middle and is more concerned about getting back home to his treasure hunting hobbies, until being sidetracked by Lynn collins' beautiful princess who is trying to save her people.
Being on mars John Carter assumes supernatural powers of strength and a low sense of gravity, jumping hulk like from rock to rock. These are used effectively in the action sequences albeit not many of them, the stand out being a gladiator style fight with two giant alien apes. It all works but that's just the problem, that's all it does do. Taylor Kitsch stands his own and being a big fan of his in the excellent Friday night lights its good to see him having opportunities in big budget movies like this.
Its a relief when the story shifts to mars as the movie starts very slow in the period setting and does not take advantage of it by exploring Carters back story in depth. Points in the film being to feel familiar to other more successful pictures and in the end leaves you satisfied but wanting more. It has its moments of comedy and excitement but not enough to make this film rewarding or to warrant a second viewing.
3/5 Worth a watch

WARRIOR

With this being my first post i thought it would be fitting to start with a movie that i really enjoyed on my first viewing and grown to really love after several more viewings. Warrior. It shares many resemblances to many films such as rocky and has the old cliches that go with the territory of sports movies, but warrior brings in abundance what the fighter couldn't, real heart felt emotion. I'm not going to go into the story, more the performances. In my view Nick Nolte is the stand out. You can really feel his heart just sink when the brothers knock back his efforts of forgiveness and as much as you can see why, you just want to see them work it out. His Oscar nod is well deserved. Tom hardy is an actor who since Bronson has emerged as one of the most gifted and sought after talents. His performance both physically and emotionally is great and resembles the things that his character has gone through to get to this point. Joel Edgerton is just as equally sound and brings the balance to his rival sibling, he is the like able underdog that everyone would root for and he does convince as the family man just trying to get by. Hardy has the hardest part for sure and by the end both points collide and ultimately divide your feelings and emotions. Its a real knockout, pardon the pun.
